Papillon Dog

The Papillon breed of dog takes its name from the French word for butterfly, an apt description of its widely set and erect but angled ears. The older variety of Papillon, which has hanging, or drop, ears, has been known since at least the 1500s. The erecteared type apparently first appeared in Belgium about 1900. Papillon have a short skull, a pointed muzzle, dark eyes, a long tail carried over the back, and an abundant, long, silky coat. The dog stands from 20 to 28 cm (8 to 11 in) high at the shoulder and weighs from 1.5 to 5 kg (3.5 to 11 lb), with lighter dogs preferred.

The Papillon usually called as butterfly dog in French is a toy dog named for its erect, fringed, wrinkled ears. Orifice called the dwarf spaniel and favored as lapdog in court of Louis XIV, the Papillon appear in painting by Bouchers, and Walteau. According to the American Kennel Club, its coat should be while with patches of any two colors.
